Resetting Your Income Tax e-Filing Password A Guide for NRIs

Many NRIs encounter difficulties when trying to access their Indian Income Tax e-filing account—especially if they haven’t filed returns in recent years. Often, this situation arises after the sale of property or due to other financial transactions in India that require ITR filing. A common issue is being unable to recall the login password, especially when the account was created years ago.

Fortunately, there are multiple ways to reset the password. Here’s a comprehensive guide to all the available methods.

  1. Reset via OTP on Aadhaar-Linked Mobile Number

If your Aadhaar is linked to an active Indian mobile number, you can reset your password using this option. Here’s how:

  • Select "Forgot Password?" on the e-filing login page.
  • Choose the Aadhaar OTP option.
  • An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar.
  • Enter the OTP to verify and set a new password.

Limitation for NRIs:
Most NRIs don’t have an Indian mobile number linked with Aadhaar, making this option inaccessible for them.

  1. Reset Using OTP on Registered Email and Mobile (as per e-Filing Profile)

If the mobile number and email address saved in your e-filing profile are accessible, you can:

  • Choose the "OTP on e-Filing registered email ID and mobile number" option.
  • Receive OTPs on both.
  • Enter the OTPs to verify your identity and reset your password.

Common Issue:
In many cases, the account was set up by a consultant or third party using their own contact details, and users may no longer have access to those credentials. This highlights the importance of updating the profile with current contact information once you regain access.

  1. Login via Net Banking

This is often the most effective method and doesn’t require entering the e-filing password:

  • Log in to your net banking account with an Indian bank.
  • Locate the e-filing or income tax section. Examples:
    • HDFC Bank: Under "Pay" or "BillPay & Recharge"
    • ICICI Bank: Under "Payments & Transfers > e-Verify / e-Filing"
  • Click on the link to redirect to the e-filing portal.
  • Once logged in, go to My Profile > Change Password to set a new password.

Note:
This option works only with Indian banks that are integrated with the e-filing portal. It won't work with international or non-partnered banks like Standard Chartered (foreign NRI accounts), and occasionally Indian banks like SBI may show "access denied" errors due to technical issues.

  1. Reset Using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

Another method is to log in using a Class 2 or Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate:

  • A valid DSC must be registered on the e-filing portal.
  • Once plugged into your device, choose the DSC login option.
  • After authentication, you can access the account and reset the password.

Important:
Obtaining and registering a DSC involves several steps:

  • Online verification via video call.
  • Document submission (ID, PAN, etc.).
  • OTP-based verification on the registered number/email.
Assistance from a tax consultant or a Certifying Authority may be necessary.
  1. Write to the Income Tax Department

If all else fails, you can send a request to the e-Filing Helpdesk via email:

  • Explain the login issue clearly.
  • Attach self-attested copies of PAN card, passport (as ID proof), and proof of address.
  • Mention your PAN, date of birth, and other relevant details.

Upon verification, the department may reset the password or guide you through the recovery process.

Note:
For security reasons, the official email ID is not shared here, but tax professionals can assist you with the correct process and contact points.

Conclusion

Being locked out of your e-filing account can be frustrating, especially when urgent tax compliance is needed. However, with multiple password reset options available—from net banking and Aadhaar OTP to digital signatures and helpdesk support—NRIs can usually regain access with the right approach.

Keeping your e-filing profile updated with your current email and mobile number is essential for seamless access in the future. If required, seek help from a qualified tax advisor to avoid delays and ensure compliance.
